3rd Georgia Infantry at
Sharpsburg
(or Antietam for the Northernly Challenged)

The fight for Bloody Lane. The 3rd GVI were on the left end of the Sunken Road.

Sunken Road "Bloody Lane." Dunkard Church is in the distance. The 3rd GA came across the fields from Sharpsburg on the left to occupy the sunken road. Its position was from the large tree to the left of the lane and back through the wheat field to turn in the present day road. Photo is taken looking north-west.

View from the sunken road at the 3rd Georgia's position. The attacking union troops came over the ridge line in the middle-distance.

On the road near Dunkard Church looking back toward Bloody Lane. The tower is at the right end of the lane. The main fight was from the tower to the small clump of trees near the monument. The lane can be seen continuing to the right of the photo. The 3rd GA came across the dark green field to the lane about 10:30 AM. They fell back after several hours of fighting. They rested in the treeline at the mid-distant right.
